Minister Confirms MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been told to avoid discussing classified information in all vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about secret information while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This broader security situation underscores the importance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
