Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
